In 1984 strijkt de snoepfabriek van Van Melle neer in Breda, in een straat met de toepasselijke naam 'Zoete Inval'. Snoepjes en koekjes van drie broers. Schuin tegenover zijn vaders bakkerij in Breskens begint Izaak van Melle in 1900 een suikerwarenfabriek. Hij houdt het handwerk al snel voor gezien en gaat machinaal snoep maken.

In de jaren tachtig van de 20e eeuw verhuisde het bedrijf naar Breda, waar er ongeveer 650 mensen werkzaam zijn. In 1997 kocht Van Melle een aandelenbelang van 5% in Klene. Van Melle realiseerde toen een jaaromzet van 808 miljoen gulden. Klene maakte onder meer muntdrop, hoestmelanges en kauwgom en had in 1996 een omzet van 60 miljoen gulden.

Perfetti Van Melle was founded in March 2001 when Perfetti Spa acquired Van Melle N.V., thus creating the third largest confectionery group in the world. In 2006 the Spanish Chupa Chups was added to the group. 1900 Izaak Van Melle starts a small confectionery business in Breskens by converting the bakery founded 60 years earlier by his grandfather.

Breda was a center of the food- and drink industry. Companies like Hero (lemonade), Van Melle , De Faam (liquorice) and Kwatta (chocolate) are famous throughout Western Europe.
