Which US city uses the most IPv4 public addresses? Network Monitoring Tools

Supplemental data for "Lost in Space Improving Inference of IPv4 Address Space Utilization"

WHOIS map Introduction The power of the Internet springs from its ability to route information between machines all over the world. The Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) numerical address represents the smallest unit of this global routing infrastructure. The IPv4 routing system requires that each address be unique.

AS Core Visualizing IPv4 Topology at a Macroscopic Scale in 2017

IPv4 2013 Census Dataset. We infer utilization of the IPv4 address space and taxonomize /24 address blocks by analyzing and cross-correlating the following measurement datasets, all collected between July and October 2013: 4 types of passive traffic traces (from a darknet, an academic ISP, an IXP, and a residential ISP), 3 types of active measurements (ICMP ping, HTTP GET, traceroutes), BGP.

We used these devices to build a distributed port scanner to scan all IPv4 addresses. These scans include service probes for the most common ports, ICMP ping, reverse DNS and SYN scans. We analyzed some of the data to get an estimation of the IP address usage.

The IPv4 Map

Figure 1: 2012 IPv4 Census Map, Hilbert Projection Figure 2: Browseable Hilbert map Figure 1 shows 420 Million IP addresses that responded to ICMP ping requests at least two times between June and October 2012. The IP space is mapped to a 2-dimensional Hilbert Curve as inspired by xkcd.

The utilization of 44/8 the reason I mapped IPv4 & IPv6

Overview One aspect of the MAPPING project is to estimate the fraction of used IPv4 addresses and the current usage patterns. The IPv4 Internet Map visualises the address usage. The map shows which parts of the Internet are more heavily used and which parts are more lightly used, or are not used at all.

IPv4 Census Map CAIDA

IPv4 WHOIS Map 2007. PNG. IPv4 2006 Census Map. PNG. IPv4 BGP Geopolitical Analysis Poster. The worldwide distribution of Internet resources and address space is highly non-uniform. We present an analysis comparing five demographic measures against three measures of Internet resources, stratified by continent with substratification by country.

The result was what the researcher called "the largest and most comprehensive IPv4 census ever." The animated map shows relative usage of IP addresses over a 24-hour period. IPv4 is the fourth.

January 14, 2022 An IP address is an unique address associated with a specific computer or network host. IP addresses are managed by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) and its regional registries to various organizations worldwide. IPv4 address uses a 32-bit address scheme.

Internet Identifier Consumption (IIC) These pages present the results of CAIDA's work in 2005 and 2006 analyzing the rates and levels of consumption and use of Internet identifiers. Geoff Houston maintains current statistics on IPv4 consumption.

Map of the The IPv4 Space of 2006

IPv4 addresses are collected into address blocks or subnets . All addresses in a subnet have the same initial bits (or prefix ). The subnet 128/8 includes almost 17 million addresses from 128.0.0.0 to 128.255.255.255, while the subnet 128.150/16 includes only 65,536 addresses of the form 128.150.x.y.

The Carna Botnet was a botnet of 420,000 devices created by hackers to measure the extent of the Internet in what the creators called the "Internet Census of 2012". World map of 24-hour relative average utilization of IPv4 addresses observed using ICMP ping requests as part of the Internet Census of 2012 (Carna Botnet), June - October 2012.

Our goal is to provide representatives that are responsive, complete and stable: that is, addresses that respond to pings and traceroutes (with high probability), that cover every allocated IPv4 /24 prefix, and that do not change much over time. Our hitlists are derived from our census data.

Study of IPv4 address allocation by continents

The census sets out to ping all IPv4 addresses allocated by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) with a fixed number of outstanding probes (1200) and a 5 second timeout resulting in a rate of approximately 250 probes per second [ 1 ].
